In recent years, autoimmune disease has been on the rise.
If you think this doesn't apply to you, consider that Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition.
The same can be said for Hashimoto's, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn's and about 80 others - not to mention a slew of related autoimmune conditions, as listed here by the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association.
As Tom O'Bryan MD states in his book "The Autoimmune Fix" - if you're on the autoimmune spectrum, it's also common to have more than one condition. In other words, if you’ve already been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, your chance of acquiring two or three more is statistically high.
Counting calories, low-fat, low-carb, eating six meals a day, drinking protein shakes -- you've been bombarded with thousands of conflicting and overwhelming ideas telling you how you should feed yourself.
Unfortunately, there's no magic equation — no set of rules you can find on Pinterest to make your health dreams come true. There is good news though; it's so much more straightforward than you think.
Have you seen all the gluten-free foods these days?
It seems like a brand new thing but really, gluten-free foods have been around for while. Go into any grocery store today and you’ll see whole sections dedicated to shelf after shelf of gluten-free breads, cookies, cereals and lots more.
It’s literally an explosion of products, the majority of which didn’t exist five or ten years ago.
So what gives?
Is this gluten-free trend just another fad? And why should you even consider taking gluten out to begin with?
What’s the big deal?
Gluten is a unique protein, which can be broken down further into smaller proteins, or peptides. The most common of these proteins is referred to as alpha gliadin – or gliadin, for short. But there are many others!
Sidenote: This happens to be one of the BIGGEST problems when it comes to accurate testing, the issue being that most labs are ONLY looking at gliadin – when there are hundreds of other peptides you could be reacting to. That’s why Wheat Zoomer has become my go-to test for accurate results!
Time for another video!
If you suspect that gluten is a problem for you, your doctor want to run some labs. The problem is when the tests come back negative – when you're fairly sure you're sensitive to gluten. And that can be misleading.
It's especially problematic if he then tells you it’s OK to eat gluten & ‘go grab a whole wheat sandwich on your way home’!
The thing is, your doctor didn't intentionally run the wrong tests - so what gives?
What happens is that something can appear to be FALSE when it’s actually TRUE. It’s what we call a “False Negative“. This is why it’s SO important to understand all the twists & turns when testing for gluten sensitivity. Keep in mind, too, that what works for one person, might not be the best thing for you – no matter how seemingly healthy it might be.
That’s it in a nutshell, of course – but I dive into much greater detail in my new video series “A Gluten Primer, Everything You Wanted to Know From A – Z” (complete with accompanying tutorial)! Are you in tune with your body?
Did you know that it’s communicating with you 24/7 – or at least trying to?
Yes – those aches and pains, the headaches or migraines you’re experiencing, the digestive upset, weight gain and more, are all part of your body’s language.
Sometimes those messages are loud and clear, other times it’s subtler.
Regardless, the common, reactive response is to squash those symptoms as quickly as possible - you want it GONE. NOW!
Swiftly and cleanly - and usually in the form of a pill.
It’s perfectly understandable. After all, who wouldn’t want instant relief, especially when you’re in pain?
While I’m all for instant relief, as much as the next person – I also know that it doesn’t resolve the bigger issue, which is this:
WHY are you having those symptoms in the first place?
What is your body - in all it’s wisdom - trying to tell you? What. Is. Going. On?
Here’s a quick Primer to get you started:
There’s a lot of talk these days about the environment – be it lead in our water, endangered wildlife or polluted air.
Some of these Environmental Triggers even come from your food!
They could be in the form of chemical additives or preservatives found in processed foods – or simply your body’s inability to tolerate a food such as gluten, or dairy.
In either scenario, your body views the offender as toxic!
This, in turn, triggers your immune system – in an all-out assault to rescue you from these harmful invaders.
That’s it in a nutshell – but I dive into much greater detail in my new video series “A Gluten Primer, Everything You Wanted to Know From A – Z” (complete with accompanying tutorial)!:
If your goal is to minimize your symptoms and turn your health around – it all starts with what you’re putting into your body.
Understand, too, that what works for one person, might not be the best thing for you – no matter how seemingly healthy it might be.
According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, “Symptoms are a signal from the body that it is imbalanced, in distress, or in need of support. Sometimes a symptom is even a sign that the body is taking care of a stressor for you & you don’t need to do a damn thing about it – but what & watch. A fever is like this. Labor pains are lie this. Diarrhea from that spoiled Mexican food you ate is like this.”

There are lots of myths circulating about environmental toxicants, detoxing, and whether or not it’s even a necessary thing to worry about.
You can read Part I of this conversation here.
I like to be thorough, if nothing else - leaving no stone unturned!
MYTH #4 - I’ve Already Switched to BPA-Free Plastic
That’s wonderful - you’re already ahead of the curve!
Unfortunately, I fell for the exact same marketing spin when I first learned about BPA in plastic.
I went out and bought all new plastic containers – looking for the tell-tale stickers that said “BPA-Free”.
I thought I was safe.
But guess what?
Manufacturers are smart. They know to replace BPA with something else – other chemicals with names like BPF, or BPS.
There are lots of myths out there about environmental toxins, detoxing, and whether or not it’s even a necessary thing to worry about.
So, let’s jump right in and discuss these, one by one. (and be sure to check out the Special Invite at the very end...)
My Body Is Designed to Rid Itself of Toxins – Without Any Help From Me
This particular myth is, in part, true.
Your body is designed to detoxify it’s internal environment, and it accomplishes this task through various specific pathways:
In fact, your liver is the powerhouse for the entire detoxification process. However, it’s also where things can go wrong.
Celiac Disease is a chronic autoimmune condition - one in which your body attacks your intestines & other tissues to the point you can no longer absorb nutrients. It makes no difference how healthy your diet is - you'll still be unwell.
The only cure is being 100% gluten-free. (That said - we now know that gluten-free diet is a critical first step for ANYONE with autoimmunity!)
If you don't have an autoimmune condition - you're lucky! But consider for a moment that while Celiac Disease affects roughly 1 in 6 of the population - Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity is up to 20 times MORE common!
Which means you might not be as lucky as you think).
It's what I discuss throughout A Gluten Primer - Everything You Wanted to Know From A-Z. To learn more, & receive the most up-to-date, in-depth information regarding all things related to Gluten Sensitivity, Autoimmune Disease, Inflammation & more – be sure to watch the entire series!
Do you enjoy cooking and spending time in the kitchen?
Or, do you prefer to have someone else take on the cooking for you? Perhaps it's even fair to say you like nothing better than dining out!
Either way, here are 3 simple reasons why it’s always best to prepare your own food and eat at home.
You’ll Save Money
Do you balk at the price of organic produce?
Have you convinced yourself that only the ‘elite’ can afford to eat “that way”?
First of all, I want to stress that organic food is not a fad.
It’s not a food snob or an elitist thing - it’s a straight-up health thing. It’s also the way food used to be grown. (Your grandparents will likely agree with me here.)
Think about that!
